The star has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the UK's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on October 16 as his third album his work was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots played in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous local spots across Britain.

The money supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained financial assistance in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that helped artists and audiences.

"The notion that funds from concerts in major spaces supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has said.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
